I am concidering doing a priceline bid for a downtown 4 star hotel for our upcoming family trip (me, husband, 13 %26amp; 5 year old children). My concern is the distance to attactions. We are planning to visit the incline, station square, PNC, Carnegie and Childrens Museum. We don%26#39;t mind walking (up to 2 miles or so) but I don%26#39;t want to have to travel through bad neighborhoods or be TOO far away. Any thoughts? I do prefer to mostly walk since that is the avantage of staying downtown but might concider a cab if there was one or two times it was needed. Don%26#39;t want to spend the whole weekend in cabs.
Also will we be able to find enough family friendly eateries or are we better off outside of town.
Finally....the 4* hotels are the Omni, Renaissance, and Westin, right?
Thanks.
4* hotels...okay for family?
You are correct, those are the only 4* hotels downtown. I think you%26#39;ll be close enough to plenty of things by staying there!
Downtown Pittsburgh is not a huge city and most anywhere is walkable. My husband and I have walked from Station Square to the downtown Hilton at 2am and never had a problem - it%26#39;s not a long walk across the Smithfield St. Bridge.
Most of the ';bad'; neighborhoods are outlying, away from downtown.

Also consider that most downtown hotels have a courtesy shuttle that will take you within a mile or so, too, to save on cab costs.
I would definitely stay downtown.
You can also take the T over to Station Square to save a bit of walking.
FYI the Carnegie Museum is no where near to walking distance from downtown. It is in Oakland. You will need to take a cab or public transportation. If you mean the Carnegie Science Center then yes it is within walking distance. PNC, the Chidren%26#39;s Museum and the Science Center are all on the North Side but I guess that is no longer the PC name. The area is now referred to as the North Shore. I would not call the surrounding area a ';bad'; neighborhood but like any large city you will have areas that are depressed. If I might make a suggestion the National Aviary is also on the North Shore/North Side and IMO not to be missed.
Enjoy!
I agree you should stay downtown - I think your one issue will be finding family restaurants. I would suggest you take the T to Station Square for a bigger selection, or cross over the Clemente Bridge to Atria%26#39;s or the Bettis Grille on the North Side.
It is an easy bus ride from downtown to the Carnegie and also Phipps Conservatory in Oakland. There are approximately 7 different buses that run either up Fifth or up Forbes avenues from downtown into Oakland that will get you very close. Perhaps call the Carnegie or ask at the Hotel. It%26#39;s an easy drive also.
There are a couple of restaurants that would be ok for families. There are a couple of Qdobas, Max and Ermas, the Grille on Seventh and a couple of Greek and Pizza places that would be very casual and good for kids. It probably depends on the kids. I was just at Lidia%26#39;s and there was a family with young children. I would think that they must have a children%26#39;s menu or maybe they were sophisticated beyond their age.
