I have visitors from India whom I am taking to see Lancaster county area. Two ofthem are vegetarian. I would like to find a place to eat ';family style'; with the wonderful home cooked vegetables, etc, rather than just a salad bar and soup. Some of us, including one of the Indians, would like meat. Any recommendations? -DCK
Family style restaurant that vegetarians can enjoy
I%26#39;m a vegetarian, but my friends who I travel with are not. We eat at the buffets because everyone likes them, but I eat basically the salad, vegetables, and mostly carbs. Mashed potatoes, the macaroni and cheese, buttered noodles, etc. They are good, but I feel like I have to be rolled out of the place. I much prefer Dienners, where I can order off the menu, vegetables, salad, or a grilled cheese, or Lapps where they do a black bean burger, egg salad wrap, etc. The Kling House, not a buffet, in Kitchen Kettle Village, has veg. sandwiches on the menu. I opt for those two places usually, but we usually do the buffet (for the others) at least once a trip.

I have to agree with Mittmott once again! Dienner%26#39;s menu provides opportunity to order a plate with choice of three vegetables, or one could order soup and salad bar only. In the meantime, others can eat full meat choices at the regular buffet. See www.dienners.com and follow links to their menu. At many places, you will experience the pain of asking for reduced prices for vegetarian grazing, only to be greeted by incredulous staff who publicly humiliate with their indifference to this request! There is more than one person who could tell you what this feels like!
I always ask, except at Dienners, where it is so cheap anyway, but the only place that not only refused, but humiliated me was Shady Maple. The Oregaon Buffet (forgot to mention it) also is pretty good, and one can order off the menu also. The Hershey farm was very nice to me, and let me have salad , sides (off the buffet), and dessert for a reduced price also.(again you can order off a menu) I thought the food was very good at Shady Maple, but I would never return there in a million years, after the way I was treated. And by the way, after I posted a review on the place, I received very nasty messages, and had to report them to ta. I assumed they came from someone that works there, why else would anyone else care about someone else%26#39;s opinion on the place.
While Isaac%26#39;s (a local chain with a location in Strasburg) is not family style, it is a good choice for vegetarians. I nearly cried with joy when I saw how many great sandwich choices I had. If you%26#39;re looking for a quick lunch that will satisfy everyone, it would be a good choice. Just another possibility!
Aster143, this is great to hear. I never thought about going into that place for lunch. Thought it was just a deli. Thanks.
Isaac%26#39;s is where I usually refer vegetarians to, because of the multiple locations

Two other places I can recommend, while they aren%26#39;t family style they do offer some veg-friendly options
Wish you were here - their site is down, as I post, not sure why, but you can get a cached copy off of google

I always enjoy Miller%26#39;s on rte. 30, it%26#39;s Smorgasbord has a large selection for everyone. It%26#39;s surroundings are pleasant, linen table cloths, but casual dress. There are separate sections so that your vegetarian friends can avoid the meat area. The service is good, and you get to choose. The salad bar has many Amish treats (corn relish),etc. Their bakery is onsite and outstanding. There%26#39;s also a beautiful quilt shop. I%26#39;ve been eating there since the bakery was the restaurant, and we just ate there last month. Delicious! We usually eat around 4 p.m. before the crowds hit, but if you don%26#39;t mind it%26#39;s worth a little wait. My eyes are usually bigger than my stomach because it%26#39;s all so good.Enjoy your trip!
I%26#39;ve done Millers, and yes, they were nice to me, and discounted their buffet for me, I%26#39;m vegetarian, but I wouldn%26#39;t go back for their food. They can%26#39;t compare to Dienners or Oregon Buffet, food quality wise. It%26#39;s all a matter of taste for people. I find that the buffets really only offer salad and carbs for us veggies, I prefer finding a place where I can get a nice vegetarian sandwich, or burger.
All,
Thanks for the many suggestions... I wanted to find a family style place with local vegetables and baked goods for the vegetarians while having local sausage etc for the meat eaters. I was not thinking of buffets, but might have to go that route. Have any of the vegetarians eaten at any of the family-style places?

I don%26#39;t bother with the family style restuarants, as they are a set price, and I don%26#39;t want to just have mashed potatoes, and a few vegetables. At least with the buffet, there are lots of carbs, vegetables, and a salad bar. I think your vegetarians would find mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, possibly one or two veggies, and nothing more to eat at the family style places. Maybe some others have more experience with this.
