We are 2 40-something couples coming July 10-13. Going to Pirates game Saturday night. Staying at Westin Convention Center. I%26#39;m trying not to overplan but want to make sure we hit the high points. It seems we can park the car and walk or shuttle to most things. Thought we could take Duquesne Incline and find a nice spot for dinner Thursday. Any suggestions? Then Friday could be wandering around but we do want to go the Warhol Musuem and Friday evening hit the Strip. With the game Saturday night what are the pre-game activities like? Are there plenty of places to hang out for a few beverages before the game? How early does the fun start? Am I leaving anything out?
Thanks
jules
Finishing touchs for our weekend in July
Oh do take the Duquesne Incline to Mt. Washington.
Are you looking for something more casual for a meal? If so, try Coal Hill Steakhouse. Great views and very good food, reasonably priced.
If you want something a little higher end, try Georgetown Inn, the Tin Angel or Monterey Bat Fish Grotto.
Finishing touchs for our weekend in July
julesgirl: Some advice from a 40-something who recently relocated to Pittsburgh and explored several area; I don%26#39;t recommend the Strip District at night. There are a few neighborhood bars scattered about, but not as popular a hangout as in the past. Also some recent shootings at night.
For Friday night, I would recommend city center (Sonoma Grille, Palamino, Olive-or-Twist), Station Square area (Bar Louie, Hard Rock Cafe), or Southside (lots of cool bars here as you walk).
I%26#39;m not saying the Strip District is off-limits, but to best saved for a Saturday morning stroll.
There are plenty of places surrounding PNC Park to drink. Give Bettis 36 Grille a try. Atria%26#39;s is also nice.
I would also recommend a walk along the riverfront. Just head down the steps toward the river from PNC Park...nice views of the city.
Just so you know, the Mon incline will be your shortest walk from downtown; it%26#39;s right across the Smithfield Street Bridge from downtown. You can also walk to the Duquesne via the riverfront path but it%26#39;s a bit of a hike. I actually prefer the Duquesne, and it is nearest to the restaurants, but the Mon is more convenient.
And yes, the Strip is at its best on Saturday mornings and afternoons. Nightlife there has died down in recent years. You might enjoy the scene Friday nights along Penn Avenue at Seviche and Sonoma Grille and a couple other smaller places.
Welcome, glad you%26#39;re coming to Pittsburgh!
Thanks for all the info. I think our hotel will shuttle us Mon-Fri so I hope they can get us to the Duquesne Incline. I had read on here somewhere that it was the nicer of the two-is that right? Thanks for the Strip update. Looks like we%26#39;ll plan on doing that Saturday morning/early afternoon before we gear up for the baseball game and pregame activities. Friday night we%26#39;ll just hang closer to our hotel and cultural area (?)
Hey, we%26#39;re also coming into Pittsburgh the 10-13th of July. Don%26#39;t have solid plans other than all the museums, so I%26#39;m up for a decent downtown experience. [FYI, I love Chicago and Denver as downtown cities, but I also like Columbus (where we%26#39;re stopping first of the week). These cities all have things to do downtown... markets, shopping, art, entertainment, food (some sports is ok), so I think Pitts will be grand.] My wife visited with friends and loved it... so I%26#39;m really sure I%26#39;ll like it too.
We like to eat well, prefering interesting menus over table decor or fancy service and shopping in funky/cool, boutique style shops and stores. I%26#39;d probably prefer an older style hotel too.
Any suggestion for our three day visit?
