Philly Trip follow up

My wife and I are just back from our 4 night trip to Philadelphia, so I thought I%26#39;d follow up on some of the highlights.

We were able to get the Sheraton Society Hill on Hotwire for $149 a night (thanks Suzanne!) It was in a wonderful location, nice staff, and was a great room for the price. I would stay there again.

We really enjoyed just walking around Old City and seeing the sights. It was amazing to see how much of the city has stood for 200 years or more and is so well maintained.

On our anniversary night, we had dinner at Fri Sat Sun and loved it! The food was terrific, and we sat upstairs in a candle lit, romantic room behind the bar. I had the lamb and my wife the talapia - both were delicious!

Our only late night was at a show at the Helium comedy club. We busted at the seams to the antics of Hal Sparks. It was a great time.

The low point of the trip - trying to find good pizza near the hotel. I took the advice of many and walked to south street for Lorenzo and Son%26#39;s only to be disappointed by the fact that you can%26#39;t sit there and eat!? We were actually more frustrated by this because we%26#39;d just walked 7 blocks or so from SoHo pizza on Market because they didn%26#39;t have what we wanted. So, needless to say, our pizza search came up short. And we were SO looking forward to it.

Okay, my take on the cheesesteak issue...we ate at Sunny%26#39;s, Campo%26#39;s, and Jim%26#39;s. Our fave of the three would have to be Jim%26#39;s. I think the main difference was the thinly chopped steak, as compared to the slices you get at the other places. Oh, and once we had one with wiz, the other cheeses didn%26#39;t stand a chance.

Coming from a town where everyone drives to get anywhere, we both really enjoyed and were entertained by the taxi drivers in Philly. Not only do they honk at everyone in sight, but they drive like maniacs - at least the ones we had...

Thanks to everyone on the forum for their insight. I became a regular to this forum and would visit it almost every day before the trip to make sure I hadn%26#39;t missed anything. Keep up the good work!

Philly Trip follow up

Thanks for the report. Glad you had a good time and survivied the taxi rides. Please come back, and maybe we can help you find better pizza, though honestly it%26#39;s not a Philly specialty. (I think Lorenzo%26#39;s is only enjoyed in a state of somewhat altered consciousness, judging my most of the folks I see munching on slices outside, but I can%26#39;t say that%26#39;s in my realm of expertise.)

Philly Trip follow up

Thanks for the great report. I lived downtown for almost 20 years, and was never able to find good pizza, so don%26#39;t feel bad. There are two or three places in Philadelphia that are really good, none of which are close enough to town or easy to find, and then there are one or two places in Trenton, NJ.

Glad you found and enjoyed Fri Sat Sun. I am also glad you have seen the wisdom of Wiz, and that you picked my favorite, Jim%26#39;s.

BTW, the current crop of cab drivers are pretty tame. The old timers are mostly gone now. Now, THEY were the real maniacs. I must confess that many, many years ago I spent a few months driving a cab. One of my favorite things was speeding around City Hall as fast as I could to scare the businessmen in the back seat. Still makes me smile.

Hi cornbread2:

Great trip report - thanks - this board can always use a few more.

Did you go inside any of the historical sites in Old City? Which one was your favorite?

I%26#39;ve lived in Philly all my life and to this day, I don%26#39;t consider a cheesesteak to be a proper cheesesteak unless it has Whiz on it and I simply cannot eat one without it...perhaps you%26#39;re a native Phiadelphian at heart!

I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed your trip and please come back soon!

PhilliePhanatic

I agree Phillie is not known for pizza, but they do have delivery if you%26#39;re tired. I like the steak you chose, good, huh? Didn%26#39;t you check out the hoagies or pretzels. There%26#39;s so much to do here, come back and check out some more. The Art Museum, the historic site, the waterfront, the theaters, the Kimmel Center, etc.,etc. Thanks for giving us a plug.

Thanks for the comments! 3 cheesesteaks in 4 days? Anyone who can eat like that qualifies as an honorary Philadelphian.

The pizza at Lorenzo%26#39;s has a dedicated following based largely on fond guy memories of nights ending in conversations that go roughly like this - ahiloveyoumansohungrylookpizzastillopendude.
