My mother %26amp; I are coming up on Aug. 15 %26amp; 16. We have Friday night events scheduled but I%26#39;m not sure what we want to do on Saturday. If I wait until we get there will every thing be sold out?
I%26#39;m guessing we will want to do something like a dinner/theatre or ghost stories/tours.
How busy in August?
A summer weekend will be pretty crowded, but you should be okay finding something to do on Saturday. You really can%26#39;t turn around downtown at night without running into a ghost tour, there are that many. Some of the longer-established ones, like Ghosts of Gettysburg, will probably fill up quicker. I think you may even be able to buy tickets online for that one.
If you plan on catching a show at the Majestic, you should be able to get in on Saturday night unless it%26#39;s a very popular event. And between three movie theatres (all opened in the past four years), there are probably 20 screens in Gburg, so that is always an option.
How busy in August?
Thanks for the information. I am looking into places to stay and not sure if I should stay right in town or not. How far is The Dobbin House from town? Walking distance?
The Dobbin House is in town, although it is a decent, partially uphill hoof to the shops and restaurants around the square (downtown). Dobbin is close to the National Cemetery and Cemetery Hill, and is on the Steinwehr Avenue tourist strip that has other restaurants and souvenir shops.
I%26#39;d direct you to the reviews for choosing lodging. . I know locations and reputations of the hotels, but since I don%26#39;t stay in Gettysburg, I%26#39;d see what others have to say!
August is a busy time but less crowded than the peak events around the anniversary of the battle in July. The Visitor Center, being new, is very very busy. I would recommend being there first thing in the morning if you want to see the new museum. As far as hotels, I love parking the car and walking so checking out the BnB%26#39;s in town would be smart...just also be aware of the TRAFFIC NOISE in town, especially on the east-west that is actually Rt 30...stayed a half block North of Rt. 30 and the trucks rumbling thru kept me awake. It was however, a short walk to the Cannonball Malt Shoppe just east of the square...yum!
Last time there, we stayed at the fairly new Courtyard Marriott, its clean and nice but FAR from town, there is no walking to anything from there, a definite drawback if you like being able to walk...too isolated for us.
We love to drive West of gettysburg to the Orchards, Boyers and the Round Barn, the scenery is amazing and the peaches equally amazing...less traffic out that way, then we circle around and go to Hollabaugh%26#39;s farm market North of Gettysburg.
Great advice in prior post about the ghost tours and Majestic, etc. Have fun!
Thanks for all the responses. I booked a room at the Gaslight B%26amp;B, and included the Essential Gettysburg package. It looks like it includes just about everything we want to see and we don%26#39;t have to worry about booking it all ourselves.
We also have dinner reservations at The Cashtown Inn.
