Family hotel in safe neighborhood

My family of 5 (3 grade-school-age children) will be driving through Pittsburgh this summer and staying 2-3 nights.

We want to go the Carnegie Museum (and perhaps walk around downtown or another interesting neighborhood). Probably also go on an %26#39;incline.%26#39;

I have 2 questions:

1. Which of these hotels is best for walking to supper?

Hampton Inn - Downtown

Residence Inn by Marriott - University/Medical Center

Courtyard - Shadyside

Holiday Inn - South Side

Holiday Inn - University Center

2. Am I wiser to stay at the Hampton Inn and drive to the Carnegie Museum (and walk downtown) or vice versa?

For walking to supper, the Holiday Inn South Side, hands down.

The Hampton is getting great reviews on this site. Assuming you%26#39;re not in rush hour, the drive from downtown to Oakland is not difficult. (I say not difficult in Pittsburgh terms...the city can be hard to get around.) Dining options downtown tend to be either very high or very low-end, so that would limit your options for kids.

Oakland is a good place to stay and has good casual dining options. South Side is a fun neighborhood. So is Shadyside, though the Courtyard is at a busy intersection several blocks from the actual neighborhood.

With kids you might also want to check out the Children%26#39;s Museum and Aviary on the North Side.

Hope I helped and didn%26#39;t confuse you more. Glad you%26#39;re coming!
