We%26#39;ll be in Philadelphia next week doing research for our book on beer and travel -- recommendations on a good hotel well situated to downtown taverns and the like? Thanks in advance.
good hotel for beer research?FYI ...Joe Sixpack, the Daily News beer reporter, has done an extensive book on the Philly beer scene. It might be useful for your research. I think a central location would be best, such as a hotel along the Avenue of the Arts...the Doubletree perhaps.
good hotel for beer research?Up until recently I would have said anything near the Independence Brew Pub, but they are gone now..
Pretty much any Center City hotel will work, gophila.com is a good place to start.
You will probably also want to plan to visit the Manayunk section, as I recall there is at least one good brewpub there (I don%26#39;t drink, so the name is not something I would remember, but my friends have gone there).
Loonbeam is right. Manayunk definitely has some hidden gems. The Manayunk Brew Pub has some great beers (try the Schuylkill Punch) and a great outdoor bar and dining area right on the river. Though they don%26#39;t brew their own, Flat Rock Saloon the best selection in the area.
Any hotel in the downtown area will do. So many pubs, so little time...
You might want to stop by The Victory Brewing Company which is located about 40 minutes from Philly on the R5 train route in Downingtown. Easily accesible-you could walk there from the train stop (a flat mile through a safe town). They are a for real brewery and bottle the stuff right there but also have a small tavern taht serves food and their various micro-brews. Victory is a hidden gem. Recently I heard it mentioned on NPR and the beer they were discussing was mentioned as being the best in the US.
