We are visiting family in Erie July 26- August 1. We plan to rent a car and drive to a larger east coast touristy city and drop car off, and rely on public transit for the remainder of the vacation. Not sure what would be the safest drive.
Need some feedback on driving from Erie to one of these cities: D.C., Boston, Philadelphia. Any other suggestions. Are they all about 8 hour drive from Erie?
The end of the vacation we will be in NYC, therefore we are not looking to drive directly to NY. We hope to take a train to NY from the city we choose.
thanks for any information
suggestions for large city after Erie visit.
Of the large cities you mentioned, my recommendation would be Washington, DC. You can probably drive it in slightly under 8 hours. There is so much to do and see in DC and a lot of it is free. Also, it is extremely easy to get around Wash DC using the Metro, public transportation. If you do stay in DC or the outlying areas, make sure your hotel is within walking distance of a Metro station. I would think it should be easy to catch a train from DC to NYC to complete your trip.
suggestions for large city after Erie visit.
thanks for the information. Seems like the drive to DC wont be too bad and there is lots to do.
Though my husband and I enjoy three-day weekends in all three cities, I also think you%26#39;d be smart to choose DC. It%26#39;s actually the shortest drive of the three for you and offers such an array of things to do and amazing restaurants.
DC is around 6 hours, Philly at 6.5, I%26#39;ve made the drive about 30 times between the 2. NY and Boston are closer to 8. The real issue is the direction of the roads in PA and the route to DC takes best advantage of the square layout.
If you haven%26#39;t been to DC before and are coming all the way from CA, it%26#39;s a definite - hard to pass up our nation%26#39;s capital. That said, you could also make a quick overnight or day stop in Philadelphia en route to DC. For the same reason as DC, if you%26#39;re coming all the way from CA, I%26#39;d at least think about 5-6+ hours for a quick visit to the city of Independence!
The NE Corridor is extremely efficient for Amtrak with trains that run constantly you%26#39;ll have no problem getting trains either early in the AM or late in the evening into and out of DC/Philly. (all NB trains stop in PHL to NYP anyway)
Thanks for the info, DC seems to be the best place to be tourists for several days. We have visited before, but there is so much we haven%26#39;t seen. Would definitely want to stop in Philadelphia on the way to NYC and while in DC, might try to see Baltimore.
We also considered a southwest flight from PIT to BWI, but the transportation to and from the airports makes the rental car (6 hour drive) seem like the easier option.
