My wife is taking her mother to UPMC for cancer surgery. We know nothing about Pittsburgh/Oakland, and unfortunately I cannot go with her due to work schedule and family issues. She will be staying the first week at Forbes Ave Suites, but not sure after that. Her mother%26#39;s recovery will take 2-3 weeks, so I need to gather as much info as possible concerning the neighborhood.
Please advise if you have any info about the Univ. of Pitt area, hotels, grocery markets, etc.
Thanks
UPMC Area Questions
I lived in Oakland for 10 years. There are a ton of fast food places along Forbes Ave. and the various side streets. Uncle Sam%26#39;s on Oakland and Mad Mex on Atwood are two of my favorites.
South of Forbes is primarily run down apartments rented to students. The place doesn%26#39;t look too nice be is mostly safe. Use normal caution as in any big city.
Hotels: Holiday Inn, Hampton and Wyndham. There is a hotel (Best Western?) on the Blvd. of the Allies but I would avoid as its a little out of the way.
Grocery Stores: Giant Eagle is the main store in the %26#39;burgh. Search their site for locations. Odds are the one on Centre Ave. is the closest with the one on the South Side being the nicer one. There is a small family run Italian grocery on the corner of Bates and McKee. I visit them everytime I come back home.
Parking in Oakland is tough. Best bet is park the car and walk everywhere. Your wife may want to find a ';mom and pop'; run parking lot and pay for a whole month up front.
I suggest looking at Google maps extensively using their street view option.
If you need more specific information feel free to send me as many messages as you want. I wish the best for your mother-in-law.
UPMC Area Questions
Thank you very much, Yeti249. All of your tips are greatly appreciated, especially the parking. Parking is always a nightmare in Univ areas. Have a great day.
UPMC has some housing available for out of towners. Unfortunately I don%26#39;t know much about it but here is the web site. Prayers sent your way for a positive outcome.
