My husband and I will be in Philadelphia over a weekend in late August after dropping our last in house teenager at college. Besides the Art Museum we%26#39;d like to visit sites in Fairmount Park - Water Works, Laurel Hill Cemetery (he%26#39;s a landscape architect) and other historic landscape or urban design sites. We%26#39;ve pretty much toured the areas around Independence Hall. We realize parking is expensive so we%26#39;d like to turn in our rental car. Can we reach these sites by public transportation? (Tony helped us with terrific information on our last visits although we had a tough time getting back from the art museum last time as the Plash was not in operation. Long walk in the cold, dark back to Market Street.)
And, we have stayed at the Sheraton Society Hill in the past thanks to Suzanne%26#39;s help for a good price. Since we%26#39;re just two now, I%26#39;d like to try Priceline or Hotiwire and stay in a different area - we%26#39;ve never seen Rittenhouse Square. Any suggestions as to bidding or tactics? Thank you in advance.
car and priceline/hotwire question
Can%26#39;t help with the hotel/discount site question (that%26#39;s Suzanne%26#39;s and Lynn%26#39;s department), but...
You can%26#39;t get to Laurel Hill without a car. The Wtaer Works is directly behind the Art Museum. You may also want to visit Memorial Hall on the west side of Fairmount park, near the zoo. It is the last remaining building from the 1876 World%26#39;s Fair. It is under renovation at the moment, but I think your husband will find the site interesting. Several large sculptures, and there is a large, curved cement bench outside, called the whispering benches. You sit at one end, he at the other, and you can whisper to each other.
There are a few hotels at/near Rittenhouse Square, but they tend to be expensive. You should check out all four squares, Rittenhouse, Washington, Logan (Circle), and Franklin. Each is loveley and each has a character of its own.
car and priceline/hotwire question
Hi there -
Give me your exact dates of stay and I%26#39;ll help you target something in a different area. You%26#39;d have to use Hotwire, though - Priceline just lumps everything into one category ';Downtown Philadelphia'; whereas Hotwire breaks it down a bit more - Center City East, Center City West and Old Town (really Old City)/Penn%26#39;s Landing. That is the area you stayed in before, so we%26#39;d look at the other options.
