Can someone help with the pronunciation of the word Schuyikill. I see it in quite a few places around the Philadelphia area. Is it like ';sky a kill';. We%26#39;ll be visiting the area soon and don%26#39;t want to sound like the complete hicks from Kansas that we are.
Thanks,

Schuyikill Pronunciation
Good question. It is usually pronounced SKOO-kill or SKOO-kull (accent on the first syllable).
Schuyikill Pronunciation
FYI the correct spelling is Schuylkill
The correct pronounciation is ';SCHOOL-kill';, but most people say ';SKOO-kill';, or skookul.
If you aar talking about the road try sure kill
Well, now that I know how to spell it, looks like I can pronounce it about any way I want and no one will know the difference. I like that.
The river is nasty and the expressway is hazardous.... ENJOY your visit...
As long as you pronounce the first syllable SKOO (and not SKY) you will be fine
Now that that you have Schuykill down pat (it is Dutch), you next can puzzle through the pronunciations of Uwchland, Bala Cynwyd, Llanerch, Gywnedd and, my personal favorite, Tredyffrin! These are among the many Welsh names in the Philadelphia area. We can save the native American-origin place names for a later visit!
You forgot Clwyd (it%26#39;s a road in Bala).
I know Owlyn; left out Bryn Athyn and others too. So many names, so little time.
ChannelCat: sorry; guess it is Philadelphia humor. I cracked up years ago in Texas when I overhead someone speaking of a well-known Philadelphia suburb (Paoli) and they mispronounced it Pay-oh-LIE. Every city has its quirky names.
